  • Yahoo Site Explorer Update

Yahoo’s Site Explorer service that was launched back in September of 2005 has just had a major update.

Following the lead of Google’s Sitemaps Interface, or Webmaster Tools as it’s now called, Yahoo has added a user administration panel, where users will be able to submit feeds, check statistics, get backlink numbers, and other useful information.

Like Google’s Webmaster Tools, Yahoo Site Explorer now requires users to verify that they are acually the owner of the site by uploading a unique id file to the webroot of a site’s domain.

This process can take up to 24 hours, so I will be looking forward to hearing some feedback in the comments.

I have to add, that Yahoo! still doesn’t have the “it” factor. At least for me it doesn’t. There’s just too many little annoyances I find with it.

For example, right when you login into site explorer, you are presented with a data-table of your sites. Why would you ACTUALLY link a sites domain to it’s homepage? Based on its location on that page, my initial knee-jerk reaction was to click to view options associated to my sites. Nope, that took me to the actual site. Why? I just don’t understand the convenience. Further, clicking on manage site, really doesn’t present options to MANAGE the site other than adding in a sitemap. Misleading.

Further, to explore a site, you have to enter the url at the top of the page. Ummm… why not just put an additional column on the main screen that does that for you. OR wait, even better - this ones going to knock your socks off - instead of linking the url to the homepage, link it to the explorer page. So it executes the query for you.

I’ve noticed a plethora of other misnomers throughout the entire Yahoo! experience (main site, admin sections, etc…). Makes you wonder who’s cranking the coggs back there.

OK, enough for now.. just venting.

Love the site man, been using for quite sometime. “Keep it Up” (that’s what Ron Jeremy once said).
