Google Crack Down on Non-Natural Links

A theread was just posted by brandall, one of the moderators over at SEOChat, discussing a Q&A session with Matt Cutts at the 2005 PubCon Search and Marketing Conference.
Brandall gives a brief summary of what was said.
Basically, what I took from the sessions is that Google is actively removing or significantly decreasing the value of non-earned links, and that this trend will be continuing and expanding.

At the last Search Engine Strategies Conference, Cutts talked about “Natural” links being what people should be focusing on. He talked about how easy it is to spot un natural linking patters, and this just confirms it.

Wow…
Based on what I have read on that thread, reciprocal links will be penalized or will be given little if null value. So my hard earned time spent online searching for relevant websites that share the same content I do and serve as a gateway to users who are searching for like products is, now, well, irrelevant????
At times, it almost feels like the guys at Google feel they are the Gods of the Internet. Which, frankly speaking, they are very damn near it. But that is a fine line they are walking on. One wrong move, and the masses will turn on them.

Since Google is the number one way to get traffic to a site, this is going to make it so much more difficult than it has been in the past to be successfull.

Real natural links - as opposed to SEOd natural links - will never help your site much though. Unless the people linking to you happen to include high-traffic keyword phrases in their link back to you.
This just makes SEO more challenging and fun.
