Search Engine Ranking FactorsRand Fishkin of SEOmoz.com has gathered an impressive all star group of search engine optimization industry experts to participate in his second version of “Search Engine Ranking Factors“.

Right off the bat, one huge improvement over last year is the layout and design of the page. Though design isn’t a ranking factor, Design can be Link Bait, and definitely influence popularity and ranking. I couldn’t find out who the designed the page, but Kudos to whoever it is.

This years stats in a (very small) nutshell.

    Top 10 Positive Factors

    2. Global Link Popularity of Site
    3. Anchor Text of Inbound Link
    4. Link Popularity within the Site’s Internal Link Structure
    5. Age of Site
    6. Topical Relevance of Inbound Links to Site
    7. Link Popularity of Site in Topical Community
    8. Keyword Use in Body Text
    9. Global Link Popularity of Linking Site
    10. Rate of New Inbound Links to Site

    Top 5 Negative Factors
    1. Server is Often Inaccessible to Bots
    2. Content Very Similar or Duplicate of Existing Content in the Index
    3. External Links to Low Quality/Spam Sites
    4. Participation in Link Schemes or Actively Selling Links
    5. Duplicate Title/Meta Tags on Many Pages

Overall, the new page is extremely well done, and definitely worth bookmarking.

You know, a lot of people don’t even use META (keyword and description) tags anymore. Try to think about it from the perspective of the search engine engineer. How much importance should you give to a tag that is not visible, and can contain anything under the sky. It’s just too easy to spam.

Also, at least 5 of the top 10 deal with inbound links, so I don’t think that was left out.

      These should clear things up:
      Inbound Link
      Link Popularity
      Anchor Text

Age of Site Global Link Popularity

How can “Age of Site” being listed? I have very static domain which has same PR3 and same 5-7 constant backlinks during last 5 years!!!

P.S. About tags, only “description” plays very small role showing in a search results; no any role for indexing
      is important, 1st place

    7. MyAvatars 0.2 Bambarbia Kirkudu Says:

With all parameters remaining the same (except Age of Site changing each day) I have constant PR3. It proves that PR does not depend on Age of Site at all!!!
(may be amount of Global Links depends on Age of Site, Quality, Language, Content, and etc. - but it is another “lower-level” function not needed for PR)

Does any of so-called “SEO Experts” know some Math?
