1and1 Dedicated Hosting: Cheap, but…

Some of you may have noticed that seologs.com and dnscoop.com were down last night. Both are hosted on the same dedicated server at 1and1.com. This server has been running like a charm for well over a year now. No problems.

Out of habit, I immediately called 1and1. They are always good about answering quickly (I also have several sites hosted on their shared hosting) . They transferred me to one of the server admins. While I waited, I logged in via ssh and checked the server. It was fine. So now I’m speaking with the server guy. He asked what the problem was. I explained briefly, and he basically said, “…yeah. You might want to fix that.”

Doh! I felt pretty dumb, but I’ve been dealing with Rackspace so much lately (for work) that I have just gotten used to support fixing pretty much whatever problems I have.

Then I thought to myself, “I should switch to Rackspace…”. It only took about .2 seconds to realize that that wasn’t going to happen. So I did a quick /etc/init.d/httpd restart, and went about my business.

I have to say, I’ve been very impressed with 1and1’s dedicated hosting. $100/month, and pretty danged sturdy, but if you don’t know your way around Linux, it’s probably not for you. You might try their managed option. You get support, but the setup is pretty limited (only one IP, vanilla CP, and no poking around).

I don’t have any beef with 1and1’s web hosting. However, I curse the day I ever listed any domains with them. Check out Red Flag for some customer comments.
It should be a warning that when their phone is answered by a recording that tells you if you have gotten a notice from NCO, a collection agency, to press a certain number. If they are a reputable business, why do they have to send so many accounts to a collection agency?
The Eastern Pennsylvania /Washington DC Better Business Bureau have given 1and1 an “unsatisfactory” rating. An investigative journalist, Kelli Jack has written a series of articles about them and has a pending law suit. She says: “1and1 Should Be Shut Down.”

    Ouch.

Thanks for letting us know :)

Well, with an unmanaged server, you are expected to do most of the work yourself. They basically support the hardware and the Plesk Control Panel. But that’s usually enough for most purposes, and I imagine you’d pay a whole lot more at Rackspace for the support.

So far, I’ve had good luck with the box we set up at 1and1, by the way. I do 99% of the stuff myself, and have an admin who handles the other 1%.

    Peace,
    Gene

Ha, i forgot to verify my mail :P
Anyway did you find out what caused Apache to crash? I can imagine Dnscoop generating a fair bit of traffic so just curious as to what the issue was.
Did you check logfiles and so on?

@Warth I agree. I always keep my domains away from 1and1.

@gene 1and1 makes it clear that for the $99 root access/ dedicated, there is no support. I was just caught off guard. Racksace is making me soft :)

@JB, The problem was mysql. dnScoop stores lots of history. I probably need to go in and take a look/ clean up a bit.

  6. JB Says:

You probably need to increase the mysql limit settings.
I think it’s the max_connections and max_user_connections variable, if it isn’t that then maybe try increasing query_cache_size.

Not sure if above answers help but it came to mind.
But Apache didn’t crash then, i think you just got the max connections message.

I started using 1and1 only for domains because they are first I found with low prices domains that includes FREE private registration on whois data and also as my friend recommended them to me…

But, I’m not very happy with the speed of purchasing a domain name. It can pass sometimes for about 3-4 days until I have it up-n-running, and I used to use GoDaddy which gives you a domain name within a few minutes (.com) !!
So, I’m shopping domains on GoDaddy and then transfering them to 1and1 for free private whois :)

For hosting services I’m very satisfied with MediaTemple.net and their Grid Hosting…
