Is Yahoo Exaggerating?

I knew there was some reason why I didn’t write a post about Yahoo’s claim to have the largest search index, containing over 19.2 billion web documents.
for those who are curious this update includes just over 19.2 billion web documents..
from the Yahoo Search Blog
It still made some pretty big ripples. Well I came across a very interesting study that was done by Matthew Cheney, Mike Perry, and Dr. Orville Vernon Burton called A Comparison of the Size of the Yahoo! and Google Indices. These guys got really suspicious when they heard Yahoo’s Claim. So they decided to put it to the test.
To make a long story short, here is what they found.
Based on the data created from our sample searches, this study concludes that a user can expect, on average, to receive 166.9% more results using the Google search engine than the Yahoo! search engine. In fact, in the 10,012 test cases we ran, only in 3% of the cases (307) did Yahoo! return more results.
