Current Pagerank Tools

You may have noticed that I removed the “Current Pagerank” tools from the list of SEO tools yesterday.

I noticed that it was returning a rank of ZERO for every query starting a few weeks ago. I waited to see if it was a glitch, but it still returns a zero.

Matt Cutts actually mentioned this on his blog recently while answering some questions:

Q:’Is the RK parameter turned off, or should we expect to see it again?’
A: I wouldn’t expect to see the RK parameter have a non-zero value again.

Q: ‘What’s an RK parameter?’
A: It’s a parameter that you could see in a Google toolbar query. Some people outside of Google had speculated that it was live PageRank, that PageRank differed between Bigdaddy and the older infrastructure, etc.

As usual. The answer to the question “What is the RK parameter?” is not answered at all.

Jim Westergren gives this explanation:

Matt, hope you are ok that I post this :) , anyways I give here my theory:

The RK ‘Internal Live PR’ values were not supposed to be public and thus Google put them now all to 0.

It’s been a long road, but I always knew it wouldn’t last forever.
July 2005: I made my first tool that used the RK parameter
October 2005: After 2 successful pagerank predictions using the RK parameter (Matt cutts blog and the Million dollar home page), I Introduced the “Current” Pagerank tool which uses xml/ xslt to extract the data from google’s response.
March 2006: RIP “Current” Pagerank tool (for now)
