Google’s Newsletter for Librarians

Google has published the first edition of the Google Librarian Newsletter today. This months newsletter is titled “How does Google collect and rank results?“. It is written by Google engineer Matt Cutts, and it really does a great job of explaining how Google works.

The article is peppered with “Activities for students”, which are actually really cool. My favorite activity was one that can actually help to understand how the engineers at Google think.

Here is just a preview of that exercese.

An exercise for students

Pretend that you’re a search engine. Pick a query like civil war or recycling …pick three or four pages from the results, and print them out. … find the individual words from your query…use a highlighter to mark each word with color… tape those documents on a wall, step back a few feet, and squint your eyes….

You know you want to see the rest.
